Apple Inc. (AAPL) to Scrap Production of iPhone 5C Next Year [Report]

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) could stop the production of the iPhone 5C next year according to the report of Taiwan’s Industrial Commercial Times (via MacRumors). The given reason behind scrapping the production in the middle of the year is that suppliers Wistron and Foxconn will close the production of the device.

Recently, KGI analysts Ming Chi Kuo also stated in his report that the iPhone maker will discontinue the production of iPhone 5C and iPhone 4S later in 2015.

Possible reasons for discontinuing iPhone 5C

At present, only 8GB variant of the iPhone 5C is available along with the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The company has taken the decision to narrow down its list of offering, and focus on the latest flagships. It is also possible that Apple features touch sensor ID across all models of iPhone.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5C, which was claimed to be the lower cost phone from the company did not see any significant sales after it was launched in 2013. Sales for the iPhone 5C were grim as the phone was overshadowed by the hefty demand of iPhone 5s. The Cupertino, California-based company did try to boost the sales by giving ads on Tumblr as well as Yahoo.com, but much in vain. Certain reports noted that the company is scrapping the iPhone 5C production to increase its iPhone 5S production and meet customer demands last year.

The iPhone 5C lured only a few customers, who were budget conscious, but in the emerging markets the potential buyers fumed over the price of $549, staying away from the so-called low-cost iPhone. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) did accept that the iPhone 5C was never meant to be a cheap phone.

Is Apple iPhone 5C a flop?

There have been numerous reports stating that the iPhone 5C has not been as flop as presumed widely. A report from Apple Insider noted that the iPhone 5C surpassed the competition during the final quarter of 2013 when it comes to sales, including various popular Android powered phones. Also, the report noted that during the June quarter, sales for 5C surged.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) talks about its iPhone sales every quarter, but does not reveal the break-up of every device. Therefore it is not easy to determine the exact number of each devices sold. However, it seems that the Cupertino, California-based company is not finding it relevant to continue the iPhone 5C at a time when the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 variants are overshadowing the smart phone market.
