American teen drama TV series Finding Carter was released on MTV in 2014. Created by Emily Silver and developed by Terri Minsky, the series was renewed for the second season in August 2014. It attracted many viewers and the critics’ response was mainly positive, as well as the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic; all in all, it seemed for quite some time as if everything was going just right. After Season 2 had ended with a major cliffhanger, fans were sure the sequel would definitely be delivered, and they hoped that would happen as soon as possible.
What made Finding Carter particularly popular was the fact that the series was different from other shows that the audience was used to watching on MTV. In case you haven’t watched it, here is the storyline. The protagonist of the show, a teenage girl Carter (played by Kathlyn Prescott) discovers one day that the woman she has believed is her mother is actually a kidnapper who abducted her at an early age. Needless to say, her life is turned upside-down. The first season revolves around this from the beginning to the very end. However, in Season 2 the focus is shifted to Carter’s relationship with friends and her love life.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Emily Whitesell, the Finding Carter executive producer, explained what made them change the focus in the sequel. She said: “As someone who creates series and tells stories all the time, you can’t just continue to tell stories about a girl who was kidnapped. That was her story but she settled into a new life and moved on.” She also added that whatever life this girl eventually chooses and whatever she does will in a way be the result of what has happened to her, but “that story runs out,” the producer concluded.
Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that the drama was well-received and that the story remained unfinished, MTV decided to cancel the Season 3. Should there be any changes, we’ll let you know, so stay tuned.
