How to optimize your laptop and prolong battery life

Many of us use our laptops daily for a long period of time. Some use them for work, others for playing games or watching movies. Because of the time we usually spend on our laptops, battery specifications have become one of the most important things we pay special attention to when choosing between Asus, Lenovo, HP, Sony or any other laptop manufacturer. Naturally, batteries work best at the beginning of the use and their quality decreases through time. Here are some things we can all do to prolong battery life.

First and foremost, the screen brightness puts the biggest strain on the laptop’s battery. Even though most modern laptops have LED backlight, which is thought to use less power, it’s still the main consumer of your battery’s capacity. The solution to this problem is to simply dim your screen and it will add an additional 30 minutes to your battery’s life. Additionally, Windows is usually programmed to “Balanced” Power options. You can change this simply by opening the Windows settings and switching to Power Saver instead of Balanced Power. Another thing you can do in order to prolong battery life is to set the screen to turn off after 5 or 10 minutes of inactivity and program your laptop to “go to sleep” after 30 minutes. If you use Windows 10, all these options are presented on your desktop, in the Action Center. In order to save battery, you should also disable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if you don’t use them at that moment.

In case you own an older model of laptop, never, but never leave the charger plugged in for a long period of time. If your laptop is always charging (even when the battery is actually charged), it will speed up battery’s decay and eventually you will not be able to use your laptop if it isn’t plugged in and in the end, you will have to get a new battery.

If you use your laptop for work every day, throughout the whole day and you don’t have the charger with you, try to run as little programs and applications as you can. Tabs, browsers, apps and background programs use a large amount of power. So, if you decided to finish your work while sipping coffee in a café reduce the number of tabs or programs to a minimum.

Another thing you may not be familiar with is that your Asus laptop battery or for that matter, any other model of battery is not designed to last as long as your new laptop does. All laptop batteries are expendable. That’s why the battery is not covered with warranty or if it is, it’s covered for a shorter period of time. After years of using the laptop regularly, you will notice that battery life is not as good as it was at the beginning, and it will continue to deteriorate. At that moment, you will need to buy a new battery. Fortunately, you won’t have to buy a battery from the original manufacturer, but you can buy it from a third-party at a significantly lower price.

As you can see, there are a number of things you can do to save your battery power and ensure the battery itself lasts for a long period of time.
