Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi: Who is first to reach 100 Champions League goals?

The two everlasting opponents Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are measuring each other’s strength while trying to bring the title of the Champions League’s greatest scorer. In their attempts to outdo each other, they have long ago left a Spanish footballer Raúl behind when it comes to the Champions League goals standing. Ronaldo with his current score of 96 goals has taken the lead in comparison to Messi who scored 93 goals. With these achievements, they are posing the challenge that will be difficult to overcome in the foreseeable future.

Messi led his team into winning four Champions League titles in comparison to Ronaldo’s three wins. Messi was also Fifa Ballon d’Or winner for five times while Ronaldo won that trophy three times. Among his biggest accomplishments, Real Madrid’s forward can also pride on winning a European Championship in 2016.

These two enormously talented football players have scored so many goals that it is difficult to keep the track, but their duel is still lasting.

While Ronaldo was by far better than his opponent in Champions League before 2008, Messi turned things around that year and until 2012 kept beating Ronaldo’s seasonal goal score.

However, Ronaldo’s domination was more than present in the last five Champions League campaigns as Portuguese surpassed Argentinian in the total result 57-42.

On the other hand, taking into consideration that Ronaldo is two years older than Messi, the question that can be asked is whether Ronaldo will be able to hold out to a slightly younger rival. For how long will he be able to strike at the same pace?

Regarding the penalties, their number is almost identical, 11 for Ronaldo, 10 for Messi. As for the knockout rounds, Ronaldo leads 44 to 36 goals in the semi-finals, while in the finals they are tied.

Despite his club achievement in the 11th European Cup, Ronaldo has been losing control with his playmates. In the five Champions League fixtures, Ronaldo lags behind Messi by five goals.

Who will come first to the hundredth goal? It is difficult to predict. We will probably find out very soon, but in the meantime let’s enjoy the rivalry.
