Based on Mari Okada’s script, “Kiznaiver,” an anime TV series debuted in April 2016. Trigger, Aniplex, and Crunchyroll joined their forces and produced the series together. It was first released on Tokyo MX, but then it was later available on other Japanese channels, including AT-X and TVA. Directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi, with character designs by Shirow Miwa and music composed by Yuki Hayashi, this sci-fi thriller drama was licensed by Anime Limited in the UK, while in the United States it can be found on Crunchyroll and several other online video streaming services.

According to MyAnimeList, the series turned out to be more or less well-received, especially by the viewers, as it holds a score of 7.65 out of 10 based on users’ votes. On Crunchyroll, it has a rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars, this time based on both users’ votes and reviews.

Kiznaiver – Brief Storyline

The story of Kiznaiver is set in future, in a fictional town in Japan, Sugomori City. At first glance, the city seems completely normal, but that’s not quite the real picture, as it is actually just a part of an experiment called “Kizna System.” The ultimate goal of this research is world peace. The creators of the system believe that the best way to achieve this is to make people share their pain and suffering with each other, whether mental or physical. These people are called “Kiznaivers,” which explains the anime title. Furthermore, we learn that in Japanese “kizu” means “wound” or “scar,” while “kizuna” can be translated as “bond” or “connection.”

The protagonist of the anime drama is Katsuhira Agata, a high school student, who finds out from a mysterious girl Noriko Sonozaki that he has been chosen to become one of the Kiznaivers, so he shares his pain with his classmates, who are also selected to become a part of the System. However, once they find themselves in this situation, they realize how much Katsuhira is different from the others and in what ways.
